Got
my eye on you - (a brief history)
BLACK
MOSES was formed in the spring on 1999 after a chance encounter between
two old friends, Graeme Flynn (bass/ vox ex-Penthouse) and Jim Jones (guitar
/ vox ex-Thee Hypnotics). As a result of the dissatisfaction with their
previous bands and the current state of music in general they decided
to renew an age-old writing partnership and the concept of Black Moses
as monster groove machine was born. In the early stages rhythm was supplied
courtesy of long-time Bristol based stone groove supremos "The Heads",
but feeling the need for full time commitment the dymanic duo eventually
recruited Chris Buncall as their permanent drum major and began the work
of fusing equal parts Curtis Mayfield and MC5 into the masterpiece that
is their Lunasound recording debut.
But now on to the suspects themselves…
JIM JONES (Guitar/ Vocals) - Should be a stranger to few of you
having first plied his trade to great effect with one of the UK's only
real contemporary influences on the "grunge" movement of the early 90's,
Thee Hypnotics . Thee Hypnotics toured extensively in Europe and the USA
with the likes of Mudhoney, Tad, The Black Crowes and the Cult among many
others. They also hold the honour of being the first British band to have
a release on Sub Pop. Extensive touring in the USA was beginning to reap
it's rewards when the band were involved in a car accident which seriously
injured their drummer. This unfortunate chain of events knocked the band
out of action for over a year and they were sadly never able to regain
their lost momentum. Thee Hypnotics last album "the very crystal speed
machine" was produced by Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes and released
on Rick Rubin's American recordings (at the behest of said Black Crowe
it should be added). Sadly due to label difficulties the album was not
afforded the promotion it deserved and after a few final years of frustration
the band finally officially split in 1998.
GRAEME FLYNN (Bass / Vocals) - was a founder member of British
blues punk powerhouse Penthouse. The band scored single of the week in
the Melody Maker for their first two singles on the Kitty Kitty Corporation
(the label founded by Quickspace). After extensive touring in Europe Penthouse
signed to World Domination Recordings and unleashed their debut album
"Gutter Erotica". The album hit the ground running as a big critical favourite,
but just as the band got a real buzz going World Domination shut down
their European office leaving the band with no record deal and no promotional
budget! As luck would have it Beggars Banquet had already been sniffing
at the heels of the quartet and soon had them signed and working again.
Penthouse cemented their new relationship by releasing an EP of remixes
(courtesy of Kris Needs, The Low Fidelity All Stars among others) from
the gutter erotica sessions. As usual, just when things were beginning
to heat up problems arose, this time in the shape of Bob Guccione head
of the Penthouse magazine publishing empire who took exception to "some
greasy British musicians" taking the name in vain and forced a change
of moniker upon them. Now newly christened 50 tons of Black Terror and
with the US release of their Gutter erotica album (now re-titled Demeter)
under their belts the boys headed to NY for a roof raising performance
at CMJ New Music Seminar in November '98. Sadly inter band relationships
were not at their best and after a tour of the east coast of the USA Graeme
decided to call it quits…
CHRIS BUNCALL (Drums / Vocals) - started his musical career in
little known Warp records signings V. They parlayed their buffalo tom
Indie rock styling into one album entitled "some moving, some stood still"
in 1994 and promptly ran into tragedy as their singer was killed in a
car accident. Undaunted by such omens Chris moved onto take up lead vocals
with Lahonda and the band signed a development deal with Island records.
The fruits of their efforts were one solitary single "Dista 310" which
didn't spend too much time worrying the hit makers of the day. Never one
to miss a chance for a change of pace he was next found collaborating
with Jarvis Cocker and All Seeing Eye on the "Walk With A Panther" single,
and from there moved to playing drums for the Mark D (longtime Melvins
Bass Player and Lunasound Artists himself) Volcano! It was in this last
emsemble that he met Graeme who was standing in for a couple of London
shows…
